Becoming a Wandsworth school governor

We currently have 1,200 governors who offer their time and skills to support Wandsworth Schools. Governors have an important part to play in raising school standards and they do this by working strategically with the school to ensure that children and young people have a good quality education.

We are looking for people who can bring energy, experience and skills to our schools. It is not necessary to be an expert, but you do need to be able to work as part of a team and to care about education. You also need to commit time to attend meetings, to get to know the school and to undertake training.

All new governors will need to meet the eligibility criteria in order to undertake the role. As well as being eligible, schools will need to carry out a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check on all new governors before their appointment can be confirmed.

In order to support schools in finding the most suitable candidate for their schools, we ask candidates to register their interest in becoming a school governor with Governors for Schools. When schools have vacancies, they register their needs with Governors for Schools too who undertake to match schools with candidates based on the skills required by the school.

Once Governors for Schools have received your completed application form they will add your details to their database of prospective governors which schools can access when they have a governor vacancy. If your skills match the skills required by the school governing board, you may be contacted directly by the Head Teacher or Chair of governors to discuss the role in more detail.

You will also be invited to our termly information evenings which are designed to match your requirements and experience to current governor vacancies. You will have the opportunity to talk to schools that have current vacancies and learn a little more about the role itself. If you meet a school whose requirements you feel you can fulfil, you may be invited to visit the school to meet the Head Teacher and other members of the governing board.

If you wish to join the governing board and the Chair is happy to recommend you then your application will be taken to the next governing board meeting for approval, after which, you will take up the role and begin your journey as a Wandsworth school governor.

We hope that you will consider taking on the very rewarding role of school governor and we look forward to meeting you at the next prospective governors evening.
